Getting a NIE in Spain

If you are planning on moving to Spain, regardless of where you are from, the first and most important piece of paperwork you will need is your NIE.

What is a NIE?

NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero and will be your personal identification number while living here in Spain.

What is a NIE for?

You will need a NIE for any administration, professional and economic activity that you wish to perform here in Spain.

For example, if you are planning to buy a property or rent an apartment in Spain you will need a NIE to start the process. You will also need a NIE to open a bank account, set up phone or internet lines, register with social security, buy a car and even to pick up parcels from the Post Office.

What does a NIE Cost?

Thankfully NIE’s aren’t too expensive, the government charge a “tasa” which is a fee of 9.74 Euros per NIE which will be your only expense unless you decide to seek external help.

How to get a NIE?

It’s relatively straight forward once you know how and once you have had your appointment, you will walk away with your NIE on the same day.

Unfortunately, all of the government websites and forms are in Spanish but we suggest that you get a Spanish speaking friend to help you and, if you’re really stuck, there are companies like us around to help you.

Here are the four steps to getting your NIE:

1.     Book your appointment “cita previa” in advance online at the local police station

2.     Fill out and stamp this form (called “EX-15”)

3.     Pay the fee by registering online with this link here, you must then print out the form and pay the fee at the nearest bank, make sure that the bank stamp it for you to prove that it has been paid

4.     Go to your appointment armed with the originals and photocopies of the completed EX-15 form, the stamped form from the bank stating that you have paid the fee and finally, your passport or ID card if you are from an EU country. You must also be able to state a permanent or temporary address where you are staying in that particular city or town.
